The Isolated State
Johann Heinrich von Thünen was a German farmer from the Mecklenberg area, as well as an educated man and an amateur economist, who lived from 1783 to 1850. In the early part of the 19th century he introduced an interesting model of agricultural land use that has come to be known as the Isolated State Model (due to the fact that he described it in his 1826 book, Der Isolierte Staat, or The Isolated State). It is acknowledged that von Ts work anticipated many of the modern economic theory innovations, and in fact he is seen as the forerunner of the modern, mathematical approach to economics .
