Empty Nest Syndrome. This paper discusses the Empty-nest Syndrome. Empty-nest syndrome is a 'condition' that can affect a woman or man around the time that one or more of her children leave home. It can also occur when a child gets married, because matrimony is a clear signal that mom and dad are no longer needed in the same way as they were before. Most commonly it occurs at this time of year (October) when vast numbers of teenagers have just left for college or university. The empty nest syndrome affects both men and women, but women may be more affected simply because society places more emphasis on the mother's role. Parents might find themselves feeling alone, sadness, a loss of purpose, as well as some relief and even some anticipation as they consider doing things they haven't been able to do when the children were home. They also may feel guilty for not having spent more time with their children when they were small. When the last child leaves, it may remind parents that they are getting older.
